Lake District Walks

Lake District Walks

Five walks your dog will love — from a gentle tarn loop to open fell with long off-lead stretches. All personally selected for dog-friendliness, not just scenery.

Walk 01 · 5km · Moderate

Catbells

One of the Lakes' most loved fells — a short ridge above Derwentwater with sweeping views and mostly off-lead open terrain. Dogs should be kept on leads near the busy summit due to steep drops either side. Best approached from Hawse End landing stage or Little Town.

Derwentwater · Mostly off-lead

Walk 02 · 3.5km · Easy

Tarn Hows

A gentle, well-surfaced loop around one of the Lakes' most photographed tarns — almost entirely flat and off-lead throughout. Perfect for older dogs, puppies, or breeds that prefer easier terrain. National Trust car park on site.

Near Hawkshead · Off-lead throughout

Walk 03 · 3km · Easy–Moderate

Aira Force

A dramatic gorge walk to one of the Lakes' most spectacular waterfalls. Keep dogs on lead through the gorge itself due to the steep drops — but the open woodland above is ideal for off-lead running. Signed from the National Trust car park on the A592.

Ullswater · Off-lead woodland above

Walk 04 · 7km · Moderate

Loughrigg Fell

A brilliant open fell between Ambleside and Grasmere with long off-lead stretches and panoramic views in every direction. Routes vary from gentle valley circuits to the full summit. One of the best all-round dog walks in the Lakes.

Ambleside · Long off-lead stretches

Walk 05 · 9km · Easy–Moderate

Grizedale Forest

Over 100km of waymarked trails through managed woodland, dotted with over 40 outdoor sculptures. Dogs welcome off-lead on all forest paths. The Silurian Trail (9km) is the most popular route. Café and toilets at the visitor centre.
